More Than an Ounce of Prevention:
Building Capacity to Fight Privatization
Wednesday, December 6, 2017 7:00 PM EST ‐ 8:30 PM EST
There is an old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. In terms of protecting our members from privatization, prevention has a better record of success than trying to “cure” privatization once a service has been put up for bid. This webinar is designed to give locals an ounce of prevention and more.
Privatization is not slowing down. In recent years, we have seen ESP career families, such as paraeducators, that we used to assume were safe from privatization, come under attack. The Trump Administration has put into place high level officials, like Secretary of Education Betsy Devos, who will encourage all manner of privatization and outsourcing.
The webinar focuses on building the capacity to thwart privatization. It starts with the assumption that most members are not born activists, that activism is learned through experiences that escalate and gradually build the comfort level of individuals and locals. We start with simply attending the monthly school board meeting, but by the time we end, members, leaders, and staff will understand how we can build a bulwark against privatization from that foundation.
