The Columbus Education Association (CEA) will host its 40th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus.
The dinner is a signature CEA event to honor the memory of Dr. King. An evening highlight is an awards ceremony to highlight individuals who exemplify the spirit of King’s work:
Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award
The MLK Humanitarian Award marks distinguished service in the community in the areas of education, social justice or human and civil rights. Anyone, except current employees of the Columbus City Schools, is eligible to receive this award. Nominations may come from students, parents, teachers, and community leaders.
Helen Jenkins Davis Award
The Helen Jenkins Davis Award is named in honor of the Columbus City Schools’ first African American educator Helen Jenkins (1895-1987). Hired in 1918, her career would span 34 years. During which, she was committed to the suffrage cause and a member of the NAACP. After retirement, she remained active working on school issues and other community programs. In 1976, at the age of 81, she was the first plaintiff called in Penick v. Columbus Board of Education, a class-action suit in the U.S. District Court charging that the Columbus Board of Education had perpetuated racial segregation. She testified, “I taught for more than 34 years in east-side schools and never taught a single white student.”
